大堡礁是世界上最大、最长的珊瑚礁群，是澳大利亚最引以为傲的天然景观，它蜿蜒于澳大利亚东海岸，从农业大镇邦达伯格（Bundaberg）以北，到新几内亚湾附近，全长2011公里，最宽处161公里。南端最远离海岸241公里，北端离海岸仅16公里。
大堡礁同时是一千五百多种鱼类，四千多种软件动物，及二百四十二种鸟类的家；珊瑚其实是「动物」，因此大堡礁又有「世界最大的活体动物」之称；由于它独一无二的生态系统与物种多样性，联合国教科文组织在公元一九八一年将它列入世界自然遗产名册，也被选为世界七大自然景观之一。
